Slave Registers is a website documenting results from the project “A Social History of Slavery in Luanda, 1854-1873 by Vanessa S. Oliveria a historian of African history, colonialism, women, gender and sexuality.

In my role as Senior Web Designer, I:

  • Met with the project director to collect project requirements
  • Designed the website as an interactive high-fidelity Figma prototype
  • Supervised the Junior Developer interns on the team
  • Developed a responsive website using Bootstrap, HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, and PHP
  • Imported and organized project data into MySQL tables from an Excel sheet of over 6,599 records
  • Maintained a MYSQL database used to manage the content on the website
  • Added features to Regenerated Identities, a digital content management service provided by Walk With Web

The design for the site was created as a Figma prototype.

I used PHP and AJAX JavaScript to query the project database. The data was presented in tabular format with a search form that allows users to filter and query the data.

When a row in the table is clicked, the data record's metadata is displayed in a overlay window.
