AR Disclosures

Almost 40 years into the AIDS crisis, talk of the disease seems to have fallen off the radar outside affected circles. The Big Disease explores two new forms of telling stories around HIV in a bid to spark discussion for a new audience. Inspired by the ways that marginalized people and groups have historically told their own stories, the work employs latrinalia i.e. toilet graffiti as an unconventional story format where the bathroom wall becomes a space for conversation.

AR Disclosures is an interactive documentary installation that uses augmented reality latrinalia to critique stigma and discrimination. It was created as part of my M.DES in Digital Futures thesis.

The AR Disclosures artwork was installed in a single-use bathroom stall in Mar 2020 but was not exhibited due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walking through the installation and viewing augmented reality latrinalia. I created the final application for the experience using Vuforia Engine, a software development kit for Augmented Reality application within the Unity development environment.

The project's latrinalia, toilet graffiti, were inspired by real conversations seen in online social media spaces such as comments and tweets. They reflect different attitudes about HIV ranging from hopeful, vulnerable to stigmatized and ignorant.
