Language of Marks is a historical research project using machine-learning, ethno-linguistic models and visual methods to recover and restore the identities and life stories of people of African descent by analyzing records from the 19th century Registers of Liberated Africans.

In my role as a Research Assistant, I:

  • Designed the project website. The project's logo was designed by Thamires de Andrade
  • Designed and developed the user-interface for the Machine Learning portion of the project
  • Created the "Draw your Own" feature using P5.js allowing users to draw scarification marks
  • Developed a responsive website using Bootstrap, HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, and PHP
  • Maintained a MYSQL database used to manage the content on the website

I designed and developed the Machine Learning user flow, incorporating the machine learning model develop by fellow Research Assistant, Youssouf Traore. The Machine Learning flow incorporated features that allowed users to either upload images, pick an image from our gallery, or draw one of their own using the HTML canvas.
